In the greenhouses of the Botanic Garden of Helsinki University there are labelled samples of 950 exotic plants and samples of 3000 native or foreign plants are growing outdoors. In April–September the garden is open Mon-Fri 7am–8pm, Sat–Sun 9am– 8pm, at other times Mon– Sun 9am–5pm. Botanic Garden is part of the Natural History Museum of Helsinki University.

Visitors are welcome to the City Wintergarden founded in 1893. It is a peaceful sanctuary where the fl oral splendour varies according to the season. Th ere are over 200 plants including palms, cacti and old-time indoor plants. The flowering time of various species of roses growing in front of the Wintergarden lasts until autumn.

The whole world on a single island, from the tundra to rain forests and from mountain peaks to Finnish wetlands. The Helsinki Zoo is home to 150 animal and nearly 1,000 plant species demonstrating nature’s great diversity. In the tropics of Africasia and Amazonia it is summer all year round. To help safeguard this biodiversity, the Zoo raises endangered species and contributes to the protection of species’ natural habitats.
Helsinki Zoo (founded in 1889) is one of the most northerly zoos in the world. In Korkeasaari can be seen animals of all continents from the Arctic tundra to the rain forests.
Amazonia of South America has parrots, small monkeys and reptiles and Africasia species from the Asian rain forests and the African deserts. The Cat Valley is the habitat of rare and endangered big cats such as the Asian lion, the Siberian tiger and the snow leopard together with the red panda. Northern birds and small mammals are also close at hand.

Heureka is a hands-on exhibition and activity centre for people of all ages. Visitors can learn about science and technology by experimenting for themselves.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, there are always at least two temporary exhibitions, while the Vattenfall Planetarium shows breathtaking films about the stars and other astronomical phenomena. All in Finnish, Swedish and English, partly also in Russian and Estonian.

Visitors should come to the door leading to the public gallery, which is located to the left of the main entrance. The maximum size of the group is 25. The Suomenlinna Visitor Centre in the middle of the fortress provides information for visitors to Suomenlinna. Books, post cards and present articles are sold at the information point. The Suomenlinna Museum is located in the same building. Guided walking tours of the fortress depart from the Suomenlinna Visitor Centre and are organised daily in summer and at weekends in winter.

Arabia Museum is a part of the Design Museum. The permanent exhibition displays utility and art ceramics made by Arabia factory during its 135-year-long history.
The Gallery is devoted to special exhibitions, historical and contemporary ceramics and glass.

Ehrensvärd Museum is one of the oldest buildings of Suomenlinna. It was the home of the commandant of the fortress until 1850s. The museum is named after the founder of the fortress, Augustin Ehrensvärd, and contains portraits, artefacts, models of ships and oil paintings by Elias Martin.

The Gallen-Kallela Museum is the castle-like studio home in Jugend-style, designed and built by artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865–1931) for himself. The Military Museum’s Manege presents different defence branches of the Winter and Continuation Wars (1939–45), especially heavy equipment. The Manege also has an exhibition depicting the history of the Finnish coastal defence. The museum is housed in a manége originally built in 1881 for the Suomenlinna Artillery.

The items in the Suomenlinna Toy Museum range from the 19th century to the 1960s. Th e collection of this private museum contains hundreds of old dolls, antique teddy bears and other toys. Adjoining the museum is a delightful café serving delicious home baked coff ee bread. In summer 2008 the museum’s gallery Veranta has an exhibition showing old Finnish “Martta” dolls.

Helsinki’s oldest tram shed, now part of the wide-ranging Korjaamo Culture Factory, houses the Tram Museum refurbished in 2008. The exhibition A Century of Tram Rides focuses on the passenger’s point of view, the grass-root level. You may wish to sit for a while in an old tram and reminisce in nostalgic mood.

Spend a family day at the Manor! The exhibition Elegance at the Tuomarinkylä Manor Museum presents magnifi cent interiors from Baroque to Functional. Mammoths and Guinea Pigs is an easily accessible exhibition at the Children’s Museum telling the history of animals in Helsinki. Play is an important part of the exhibition letting visitors peek and poke into secret corners. The museums are branches of Helsinki City Museum.

Tamminiemi was the official residence and home of President Urho Kekkonen 1956–1982. Today it is known as Urho Kekkonen Museum and has a fi ne collection of Finnish art and design and gifts received from foreign state visitors. The Tamminiemi sauna is also shown to the public in summer. Special exhibitions. Concerts. Café and shop.

Villa Gyllenberg houses one of the finest private museums in Finland. Villa Gyllenberg is the former home of the Gyllenberg family. It was built in 1938 and extended in 1955. The art museum is specialised in Finnish art from the period 1700–1970 and in early foreign art.
